Providing Care During Your Child’s Dental Emergency

The main thing to keep in mind is to try not to panic. If your child sees you in a state of panic, they’ll likely become even more scared and anxious.

It’s a good idea to prepare a dental emergency kit in your home and in your vehicle. Make sure you have:

• Gauze
• Mouthwash
• Fluid for rinsing and cleaning the affected area
• A container in which to store any loose teeth

What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?

If a baby tooth has been knocked out, rinse your child’s mouth with water and apply a cold compress to reduce any swelling. Comfort your child and bring them to the dentist for a more complete check-up to make sure no further damage has been done.

If it’s a permanent tooth, find the tooth and rinse it with cool water. Don’t scrub it or use soap to clean it. Also, avoid touching the root of the tooth; instead, hold it by the crown, place it in a container and get to the dentist as soon as possible.

What should I do if my child cracks a tooth?

A cracked baby tooth is rarely considered to be an emergency. However, it’s still a good idea to follow-up with your dentist.

For a cracked permanent tooth, rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to the affected side of your child’s face before seeing your dentist as soon as possible.

How do I treat my child’s toothache?

Thoroughly rinse your child’s mouth with warm water before lightly using dental floss to remove any stuck food.

Be careful to never put an aspirin or other painkiller by the gums near the aching tooth; doing so may actually burn your child’s gum tissue.

A good temporary fix is to place a piece of sugarless gum into the cavity before quickly seeing the dentist.

Even if you merely suspect your child’s jaw may be broken, apply a cold compress to the affected side of the face to reduce any swelling. It’s crucial that you see a doctor immediately, as a broken jaw could be caused by a heavy fall or blow to the head.
